Creating the Extraordinary Student Experience: Office of Student Life

Kessler First Gen Living-Learning Community

Halls:

Kessler First Gen Living-Learning Community

The Kessler Scholars Program is a comprehensive support that begins in year one, and continues throughout a student’s academic journey to graduation. Participants have access to individualized success coaching, workshops, social events, tutoring and supplemental instruction, and direct contact with program staff for referral and coordinated care with campus partners.

The Kessler First Gen LLC seeks to expand our existing supports to those with the first-generation identity by providing a living-learning community experience to incoming first-year students at the Columbus Campus.

Living Learning Community Highlights

The mission of the Kessler First Gen LLC is to provide first-generation students with the opportunity to build a deeper sense of community with others who hold this same identity in a residential setting. This environment would allow for the type of engagement necessary in ensuring their success in achieving the Kessler Scholars Student Learning Outcomes listed below:

  • Identify and engage with campus supports /resources to develop academic, personal, and social skillsets
  • Effectively collaborate with peers, faculty, and staff in efforts to broaden individual perspectives and contribute as a 21st century citizen
  • Translate career-based exploration and research into an actionable plan that aligns academic pursuits with career area of interest

Faculty Engagement & Connections

The Kessler Scholars goals are comprised of elements to expand the peer, staff, and faculty networks of all Kessler First Gen LLC participants. This is facilitated by existing collaborative initiatives with campus partners that are committed to building bridges for first-generation students. A few of these partnerships include:

  • Office of Diversity and Inclusion
  • STEP Cohorts
  • College of Medicine
  • Buckeye Careers
  • Dennis Learning Center
  • Counseling & Consultation Services

It is through these partnerships that the participants in the Kessler First Gen LLC will have many opportunities to connect and engage with Ohio State University faculty and staff.
